Have you ever shrunken a wool sweater in the washing machine, either on purpose or by accident? The resulting felted wool is great for stitching up lots of projects, from softies to slippers and much more!

This Sunday 9/23, we’re teaming up with Denver Craft Ninjas to create cute mittens from upcycled sweaters, and you’re invited! The Denver Craft Ninjas host monthly craft projects that are a great chance to connect with fellow creative and crafty types. Associate Editor Nicki, Editorial Assistant Jessie and I will all be there, and we would love to see you there, too if you’re in the Denver area! Register and sign up via the Denver Craft Ninjas website.

Here are some mittens I stitched up last week from an orange merino wool sweater. It’s a super simple pattern that’s fun and easy to embellish. I used some felt scraps to add a flower and a blanket stitch to embroider the edges:

Along with the mitten pattern and instructions, we’ll also have fun embellishments on hand as well ideas for customizing your mittens. And don’t worry if you don’t have a sweater of your own to bring–we’ll have lots of extras on hand that you can choose from. With the holidays right around the corner, the mittens also make excellent gifts. Come and sew with us!
