Construct
Use 5⁄8″ seam allowances unless otherwise noted.
1
With wrong sides together, align the lower pockets. Baste ⅛” from the upper edge.
2
Unfold one binding long edge. Align the raw edge with the pocket upper edge on the lining side; stitch along the foldline. Fold the binding over the pocket raw edge; press. Edgestitch the binding fold from the right side, catching the first fold in the stitching.
3
With wrong sides together, align the front pockets. Baste ⅛” from the upper and curved edges. Apply the binding to the curved edges following the previous instructions.
4
With the right sides facing up, layer the lower pocket over the front pocket, aligning the lower corners. Baste ⅛” from the raw edges.
5
Using a removable fabric marker, draw a vertical centerline on the pockets. Stitch along the marked line.
6
With right sides together, align the body and pocket-backing body; stitch the lower edge. Beginning 5″ below the upper edge, stitch each side (1). Flatten the lower corners with right sides together, aligning the side and lower seams; stitch to box each corner. Repeat to construct the lining.
7
With right sides together, fold one casing strip in half widthwise. Stitch the short end; press open the seam. Turn the fabric ring right side out. Place the ring on a flat surface, centering the seam. Fold the casing in half lengthwise with the seam toward the inside (2). Baste ⅛” from the raw edge. Repeat to create the remaining casing.
8
Center one casing along the tote front, aligning the raw edges; pin, and then stitch. Attach the remaining casing to the tote back in same manner. Press the seam allowances downward.
9
Press the lining and tote upper-slit seam allowances 5⁄8″ toward the wrong side. Press the lining upper edges 5⁄8″ toward the wrong side. Insert the lining inside the tote with wrong sides together, matching the seams and corners; pin. Topstitch the slit and tote upper edges below the casing ⅛” from the edges.
10
Fold each strap short end ½” toward the wrong side; press. Fold each strap in half lengthwise with right sides together. Stitch the long edge using a ¼” seam allowance. Turn each strap right side out. Topstitch the short ends using an ⅛” seam allowance; press. Thread one strap through one casing. Tie the strap ends together. Repeat to insert the remaining strap.
