|Sponsored| New season, new home, new projects! Just because you can’t wear it doesn’t mean it can’t get the Style Revive treatment — sewing for the home makes your space unique and sustainable, and you can save some money along the way. In season 5 of Style Revive, Meg tackles home décor projects around her new house, including embroidered curtains, pillows, table settings, a hammock, and more. Meg’s husband, Julian, and her pet rabbit make some cameos in this fun-filled season.

A Peek Behind the Curtains

In this episode of Style Revive, I upcycled a thrifted, floral bed sheet into an adorable set of embroidered curtains for my sewing studio in my new house. You’ll never look at your embroidery machine the same way after you see how I embroidered the grommets!

It was so fun to unpack, organize, and set up my new studio, but there was definitely something missing … curtains! I love the natural light beaming in, but sometimes when I’m sitting at my sewing machine the sun is right in my eyes and it is hard to concentrate on my stitching.

A thrift store is a fabulous place to not only look for curtains but find material to use to make your own curtains. I loved the idea of upcycling a bed sheet since the bottom border was already finished! I also loved this floral print.

The sheet Meg turned into her embroidered curtains.

I first measured the length of my window and accounted for the curtain rod and seam allowance. I then trimmed from the bottom of the bed sheet to the cropped length and tore the sheet in half widthwise. To finish the edges, I pressed the seam allowances in twice on the opening edges and stitched. Then I also finished the top of the curtain allowance since I trimmed the sheet length.

When it came time to make the curtain “holes”, I knew I wanted to do something unique, fun, and functional. Curtains can have tunnels, grommets, clips, and more – but I thought an embroidery design could be a way to create a secure cutout. To complement the floral print on my bed sheet, I decided on the Floral Applique design from mySewnet.

The design for Meg's embroidered curtains.

I rarely hoop and stitch my embroidery blind in the hoop; I always use mySewnet with the mySewMonitor app to perfect my placement. For the curtain grommets, I measured and evenly spaced markings so I could easily place the embroidery design on my DESIGNER SAPPHIRE™ 85.

The embroidery process: making embroidered grommets for a set of curtains.

Then it was stitching time! I could fit two designs per hoop, so once those were stitched out I re-stabilized, hooped, and used the design placement feature to continue to embroider along the top. Each curtain ended up having seven designs.

Once all the designs were stitched out, I cut out the inner circles and threaded them through my curtain rod.

I love my new embroidered curtains! The white background fabric still lets the light in, and the print adds much-needed color to the wall.
