Sewists Support Ukraine
The crisis in Ukraine is horrific to watch unfold, let alone experience. Even though the crisis feels far away physically, we are all digitally connected, particularly in the online sewing community. And as we rallied to sew masks through the pandemic, sewists are showing the world how they come together to support community members. Here are a few ways you can get involved and make an impact.
Support Designers
Physical goods are difficult, if not impossible, to ship currently, but a good alternative way to show your support is through purchasing digital files. Luckily, we use many of those in sewing! Below are links to digital files, including sewing patterns, machine embroidery designs, and cutting files, from Ukraine-based makers.
Digital Sewing Patterns
How cute is this Cross Back Apron by TOTOshopUA, from Kyiv? Check out their other apron patterns.
Machine Embroidery Designs
You know Meg is going to be tempted by those cute bunnies . . . in glasses!
Cutting File Designs
We particularly love these cut file designs by BiscuitLine, based in Kharkiv.
Online Fundraising
Again, funds (rather than handmade items) are the key need at the moment. If you have finished goods to auction off, that is another way to fund-raise for Ukraine. This is taking several forms so far, from organized group auctions (usually by community) to individuals selling items direct on Instagram. There are many resources listing Ukrainian organizations to donate to.
We’ll be updating this story as it evolves and as we can include other ways to support the people of Ukraine.
The national flower of Ukraine is the sunflower, so we’re all looking forward to using sunflower fabrics and embroiderying sunflower designs to wear in support. Please feel free to share ideas in the comments below and on social media using the hashtags #craftersforUkraine and #sewingforUkraine.
