We’ll talk special tools and techniques, cutting knit fabrics, specialty stitches to try on a conventional sewing machine, installing a knit neckband, when to consider buying a serger and more. We’re taking the fear factor out of knits, all with our special guest Adrianna Appl of Hey June Handmade.

Techniques for sewing knits

If you’ve ever found sewing with knits intimidating, this episode is for you! Knits are actually a great pick for beginning garment sewists, as they’re much easier to fit than wovens. Don’t have a serger? No problem! You can sew knits on your conventional sewing machine with any number of specialty stretch stitches.

Join Amanda, Adrianna and Meg for a discussion of:

  • Knit fabric basics, including stretch percentage
  • Tips for cutting knit fabrics
  • Stretch stitches on a sewing machine, including triple stitch, picot stitch, overedge stitch and more
  • Installing a knit neckband
  • Deciding if you need a serger

One of my biggest regrets in sewing is waiting to sew knits – now I absolutely love them! I thought I needed a serger to sew knits, but I proved myself wrong. When I finally did get started with knits, I started refashioning tshirts to create baby clothes, using stretch stitches on my conventional sewing machine. My other regret is that I waited so long to get a serger! While you absolutely can sew knit on a sewing machine, a serger is much faster and much more enjoyable, plus the finishes are professional. I still love sewing wovens, but for speed, comfort and less fitting issues, knits might be my new favorite.
