Inside Sew News Summer 2021

There’s so much to love, no matter what kind of sewing you’re in the mood for, so grab the freebies now and get started! Here are a few things that made it to my summer sewing list:

Favorite Projects

Elastic-waist shorts from Sew News Summer 2021, sewn in pink linen.

Shorts are not always tops on my to-sew list, but the ruffle-y Shoreline Shorts designed by Erin Weisbart are kind of awesome. I’m uncharacteristically drawn to the ruffle detail: for me, these shorts strike such a nice balance between special and ruggedly practical. Plus that elastic waistband! The shorts feature a shirred-look waistband that is created with multiple channels of elastic, which is so comfortable!

Create place mats, coasters, and reusable napkins from sheets.

This time of year, I always seem to find myself in outdoor décor mode. And even more so this year: I cannot wait to have friends over for backyard hangouts! I LOVE the Sewstainable: Sheets to Eats set! With Sadie’s instructions, it’s easy to create a place mat-coaster-reusable napkin set from sheets, with that vintage endless summer vibe built in!

The Parker Panel Tank is a draft-your-own project from Sew News Summer 2021.

It was really hard not to keep the Parker Panel Tank by Michele Matsumoto for myself, friends: I love this design! It’s structured but flowy, classic but unique, casual but dressy . . . this tank design is basically my everything! And you draft it based on your measurements, so the fit is spot on! Now to find my tape measure . . .

The front and back of the Oso Tank, sewn in a vertically-striped woven fabric.

Apparently I’m in the mood for tanks! The princess-seamed Oso Tank, our next sew along, is tops on my summer list — and I’ve already made three! This woven tank features princess seams, back darts and a zipper closure . . . but it still seems easy and breezy for everyday summer wear! And the hack-ability!

More Inside the Issue

I’m seeing so many people experiment with projector sewing. I was super happy to supply some basics on using a projector for sewing with Tami Meyer of Love Notions patterns; learn mending tips, perfect for revamping your wardrobe or freshening up thrift finds (gosh, I can’t wait to go thrifting again!) and create a simple stitched sampler while sitting on your porch sipping tea.

Whatever your summer looks like, whatever you plan to sew, I wish you a sunny and joyful season. We’ve earned it!
