Here we are, halfway through May, and I am here to update you on my Make Nine Challenge for this year!

Every year I challenge myself with nine projects to complete. This is a casual challenge for me, and I let it change and evolve over the months. I want to be able to change my plan as new patterns are released, seasons change, and life happens. If you aren’t familiar with the Make Nine Challenge, #makenine2023, you can learn more about it here and check out my OG plan, projects, and patterns.

So, what have I accomplished so far? Well, I’m happy to report that I’ve completed three of the nine projects on my list!

Three down, six to go!

Sewing the Aims Blouse

It just so happens that this past weekend I got to sew a little for myself, and I made the Aims Blouse from Seamwork. This has been on my “to sew” list since it came out, and it immediately went on my Make Nine list.

I’m so happy with my new blouse!

I changed it up a bit so I could use some green lace fabric for the front and back bibs. The pattern is designed for these bib pieces to be lined with a facing, but I wanted the lace to be see-through. The green lace is from my old stash, and the main fabric is from one of my favorite suppliers from India.

Here is how I changed the pattern to work with my fabric.

Instead of cutting out the bib lining pieces, I simply cut front and back bib pieces from my green lace.
It took some brainstorming and playing around to get the lace collar to look right—my dress form really came in handy!
I had to play around a bit with how the lace bib would be sewn to the main shirt fabric. I opted for serging them (not pictured).

The Make Nine Challenge Meets Me-Made May

Now that we are deep into Me-Made May, I’m shifting my focus from sewing projects to wearing and using what I’ve made. After all, the whole point of sewing for yourself is to wear the pieces you make, right?

Here are the #memademay2023 items I have worn so far this month.

Choose a design that you love. Whether you’re into improv piecing or intricate handwork, use a design that fits your stash and your own personal style. Jen Carlton Bailly hand pieces mini Drunkard’s path blocks because that’s what is right for her. Others prefer EPP hexagons. What is your go-to block?
