Project Runway Recap -Season 16, Episode 7: The Ultimate Faceoff

The challenge this week was to create a menswear-inspired look using fabrics from JC Penny menswear fashions. The perfect challenge for Brandon and Kentaro, who already do menswear-inspired designs for every challenge. Sure enough, they were on the top but didn’t take the win.

The provided fabrics were different groupings of lightweight denims, shirting prints and flannel blends. The designers worked in teams, and they couldn’t choose a partner that had the same fabrics. Sure enough, the twins managed to be partners….argh.

Right off the bat, I was in love with Margarita’s design. She has become my favorite designer on the show because I actually want to wear her creations. She started with a draped shirtdress and her muslin looked good enough to strut the runway.

Screen Shot 2017-09-29 at 12.28.22 PMI knew the twins would end up in the bottom, which means one of them would finally go home!

Screen Shot 2017-09-29 at 12.28.38 PMTim was NOT impressed with their initial concepts, and made some good suggestions: make the top into a tunic, and reign in all the excess fabric that wasn’t needed and detracted from their design. THEY DIDN’T LISTEN.

Kenya and Amy struggled as partners and had conflicting ideas about their cohesive look. You can tell Kenya didn’t like anything they put on the runway. Though, Zac did compliment the construction.

Screen Shot 2017-09-29 at 12.29.44 PMBrandon and Kentaro ended up on top, but left the win to Margarita and Batani. Their looks were sporty, with hoods and lots of layers. But I can’t see their designs in a JC Penny display.

Screen Shot 2017-09-29 at 12.29.17 PMBatani made a velvet coat dress that was super cool and would look good on a number of figures. It was clear they understood the challenge and thought about JC Penny clientele for their looks. Kudos!

Screen Shot 2017-09-29 at 12.29.27 PMFinally Margarita took a win! What a cool dress. I totally want to buy it when JC Penny mass-produces it. Wonder what it will cost…

Screen Shot 2017-09-29 at 12.29.55 PMAAAAAANNNNDDD….those twins. What is happening with the color-blocked top? One ruffle on one sleeve? A strange belt? Hmmmm

I thought they might send both girls home, because Heidi couldn’t tell which designer made what. But, they BOTH live to sew another day. We won’t find out who goes home until next week, when the twins go head to head in one last battle. They will use the same fabric, have the same time limit and same models–and CANNOT HELP EACH OTHER. Who will come out on top? Who will break down? Who will go home? We’ll have to wait and see!
