Project Runway Recap

Season 16, Episode 5: Descending Into Good and Evil

The stars from Disney’s Descentants 2 were on hand at Lyndhurst Castle to present this week’s challenge: Make an eveningwear garment inspired either by “good” or “evil.” Michael, the winner from last week, got to choose who would be “good” and who would be “evil.” Everyone seemed happy with his choices.

IMO, the designers should have taken design cues from Dove Cameron (good) and China Anne McClain (evil). They looked the part!

Some cute back and forth in the workroom during this episode between Brandon and Kentaro, who are now “brothers.”

Not a whole lot of drama to report other than the TWINS. I’ve come to realize that Claire cannot make anything without her sister’s guidance. Shawn actually has a pretty cool design aesthetic, but having to constantly consult on her sister’s garments is going to catch up with her.

Margarita is becoming my favorite. Her gown was exquisite, and she had some real trouble wrapping her head around it. I think she slayed the competition, and made her model look beautiful. Yet, the judges didn’t see anything particularly special.

Batani also made a cool black gown, with appliqued burnout velvet pieces cascading across the front and one shoulder. It was expertly done, yet she was merely “safe.”

Kenya was on top this week, which was sweet redemption from being on the bottom last week. Her crepe fabric was really cool. I didn’t care for all the ruffles and big sleeves, but the judges went crazy for it. Thankfully Tim suggested she leave it backless, as I think that really made it special.

Michael was also on top, but I thought his look was bordering on costume. The feathers were neat, but almost too much. His model did look fierce…I’ll give him that.

I happened to love Kentaro’s look. He was also “safe.” What’s up with that? This look is a stunner! The drapey side with the expertly tailored bodice was just lovely. And it really said “good” to me without being Disney-princess like.

Brandon took home the win, for his strange overall-meets-crop top number. Can someone please explain this to me? Heidi thought it was so innovative. The striped fabric was just horrible. I don’t understand the “good” in this outfit, either. And can I just say SIDE BOOB???

Aaron leaves us this week, and I have to say he deserved it. Whether you take time to make a muslin or not, he was ill-prepared and didn’t finish a single seam. The model was embarrassed.

I’m surprised he just didn’t give up, so I have to give him a little credit for trying to pull it off. All the same, we’ll say “buh-bye” to Aaron and wish him well.
