Project Runway All Stars Season 6 Episode 7 Recap: A Kick in the Astros

After a week hiatus, we’re back with Project Runway All-Stars! I’m not sure why they took a week off, but they sure turned up the volume this week with the avant garde challenge.

The designers were taken to a planetarium and viewed a film about the universe and all its glory. They were to take inspiration from that to create an avant garde look with $350 and two days. Now was the time to go big.

Joshua started out with a strong idea and an innovative technique. He used Pluto for his inspiration, choosing a color palette quite literally, and decided to make a cape/overlay/vest out of…hot glue. Seriously.

Joshua McKinley + hot glueThe rest of his look would consist of backless chaps and more bondage-style pieces. Who is his customer, I beg?

I’ll get right to the final looks, because the rest of the episode just focused on this hot glue creation (and Anthony’s quick wit).

I didn’t see any of Helen’s creation in progress, but when it came down the runway I thought it was neat. The styling captured my attention first, and then the jumpsuit-thingie, which had some problems but was a cool concept. She was safe.

Ken’s black hole dress was….well, a black hole. I didn’t care for it but could appreciate the work. He was also safe.

Edmond’s look was too “safe” for me. It looked like an evening gown with the addition of some volume just so he could call it “avant garde.” I didn’t like it at all. he was also safe.

Merline made another architectural “dress,” from buckram. Yes, that’s right. She had $350 to spend and she bought nothing but buckram and interfacing. Ken was horrified. And it looked like she wouldn’t make it happen. Alas, she did and SHE WAS IN THE TOP. In the top, people! How does this keep happening to her? It looks like it’s falling apart from the back! The styling was the only thing that saved it, for me.

Fabio bought fringe, stabilized it and stitched a quilting pattern all over it to “bind it” together. Then he let some of the fringe loose at the edges. He couldn’t figure out how to sew the sleeves, so he left it as a vest and added these heavy braids. I thought it was a mess. I can appreciate the work, but I don’t think he did it justice. It’s also not very avant garde at all.  He was in the bottom.

Joshua’s final look had a lot going on. But he managed to get his glue “vest” done in time. The rest of the pieces were a bit trashy. Ken even commented that this runway would be “the battle of the streetwalkers.” And he wasn’t wrong. I couldn’t tell whether Joshua was in the bottom or the top during the critique. Isaac said something like, “it’s the worst and therefore the best.” I was confused. Turns out that he was in the bottom after all. And he gave a bunch of attitude to the judges before heading back to the lounge to await his fate, which is never a good strategy.

Anthony’s look was quite literal, with the “planet” at the chest. But he did make a cool pair of pants. Overall, I liked his look but wished he would have done something different with the bodice. The open back was also stunning. He was in the top.

Stanley turned out a gorgeous gown inspired by the eclipse. Making the face mask sealed the deal. He was in the top.

Stanley Final LookPoor Kimberly. She spent all her money on this yellow leather, which was really cool, but didn’t have enough to carry it through her design. She left the model almost naked, save for a sheer skirt and bodysuit. She was in the bottom.

Kimberly ends up going home and Stanley is the winner! Stanley also wins a shoe collection from Marchesa for his efforts (whether or not he wants to associate himself with that brand is another story).
