Metallic Foil Transfer Pillow Project

Enjoy patterns, articles, and secret surprises! Become a Charter Member of our brand-new digital sewing membership Makers Club.

You may have seen these cuties before: they’re on the cover of our Dec/Jan issue of Sew News. The Deer Me pillows (by Amanda Niederhauser) are, in my humble opinion, the epitome of great holiday decor: they’re merry, modern AND they can work well past the holidays, perfect for a cozy winter vibe in January and beyond. Using foil transfer sheets and adhesive sheets, it’s easy to add a touch of metallic shimmer to your home sewing projects.

SUPPLIES

Supplies listed are enough to create two pillows.

  • 1 yard of neutral linen/cotton blend fabric
  • 5” & 10” square of lightweight plaid fabric
  • Therm O Web Mylar-backed gold foil & hot melt adhesive sheets
  • Paper-backed double-sided fusible web
  • Two 22”-long invisible zippers
  • Parchment paper
  • 12”x20” rectangle & 20” square pillow forms
  • All-purpose thread
  • Invisible zipper foot or standard zipper foot

PREPARE

Download  the deer and applique templates free until Jan. 31, 2018. (After that, you can find them at shopsewitall.com!)

From the neutral fabric, cut two 12”x20” rectangles for the small pillowcase front and back and two 20” squares for the large pillowcase front and back.

Using the templates, trace one left-facing deer, one right-facing deer and one deer head onto the Deco Foil Hot Melt Adhesive Sheets. If the design is larger than the sheet, abut additional sheets as needed; tape to secure. Cut out each design.

Position the rectangle front panel right side up on a flat work surface. Position the two deer right side up over the panel, centering them within the rectangle and facing the center. Fuse the deer to the panel following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Once completely cooled, carefully remove the paper backing.

Position one piece of gold foil slightly larger than the deer right side up over one deer. Place a piece of parchment paper over the foil. Using a medium-heat iron, press the foil over the Deco Foil Hot Melt Adhesive Sheets following the manufacturer’s instructions. To prevent foil distortion, press using a straight up and down motion. If the design is larger than the foil sheet, overlap multiple foil sheets.

Once completely cool, carefully remove the foil from the design perimeter following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Repeat to apply foil to the remaining deer on the rectangle and square front panels.

TIP: Don’t iron over the foil once applied to the fabric to prevent bubbles and ripples.

CONSTRUCT
Use 1/2” seam allowances unless otherwise noted.

Using the templates, trace the tree and bowtie onto the fusible-web paper backing. Cut out each 1/4” beyond the design perimeter.

Position the tree design paper side up over the large plaid-square wrong side. Fuse following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Once cool, cut out along the traced perimeter. Remove the paper backing.

Repeat to create the bowtie appliqué.

Position the tree over the rectangle front panel right side, centering it between the two deer. Cover the front panel with a piece of parchment paper. Fuse following the manufacturer’s instructions, being careful not to touch either deer with the iron.

Position the bowtie over the deer head, centering it over the deer neck. Cover the front panel with a piece of parchment paper. Fuse, being careful not to touch the deer with the iron and securing the bowtie just enough for stitching.

Edgestitch the tree and bowtie perimeter using coordinating or contrasting thread.

Position the rectangle front panel right side up on a flat work surface. Position one zipper tape edge over the front-panel lower edge with right sides together, extending each zipper short end 1” beyond the panel sides; pin.

Mark the zipper 2 1/2” from each side edge. Open the zipper. Baste the zipper 1/4” from the edge.

Install an invisible zipper foot onto the machine. Stitch the zipper, beginning and ending at the marks. If using a standard zipper foot, roll the zipper teeth open and stitch as close to the zipper teeth as possible.

Close the zipper. Position the opposite zipper-tape edge over the back-panel lower edge with right sides together, aligning the front and back panel sides; pin.

Mark 2 1/2” from each side edge on the zipper. Open the zipper. Stitch the zipper to the back panel.

Close the zipper. Align the front and back panel zipper edges with right sides together; pin.

With the zipper foot installed, stitch from one panel side to 1/2” beyond the end of the zipper stitching line, as close to the zipper teeth as possible but below the zipper stitching line. Make sure the zipper tape ends are away from the seam allowances and backstitch at the beginning and end.

Position the front and back panels right side up on a pressing surface. Press the invisible zipper seam flat. Trim the zipper ends beyond the panel edges. Partially open the zipper.

Stitch the front and back panels with right sides together along the sides and upper edge.

Insert the pillow form through the zipper opening.

Repeat to install an invisible zipper on the rectangle pillowcase.

TIP: If you don’t have a pillow form, make a simple muslin pillowcase and fill it with polyester fiberfill.
