Holiday Parties, Sequins & Sheers: New Issue of Sew News is here (and full of hacks!)
The December 18/January 19 issue of Sew News is fondly referred to (around here!) as the holiday hack issue! Seriously, this issue is big and beefy and inspiring, especially if you’re in the mood for a little #sewfrosting. But don’t worry, plenty of cake, too, that will get you through the holidays and beyond. One of my favorite elements is a selection of three articles, each featuring three pattern hacks for wardrobe basics: a raglan sweatshirt (looking at you, Linden Sweatshirt), a drop shoulder blouse and a jacket. The hacks are designed to help you get maximum potential out of patterns you already have in your pattern library and turn an everyday pattern into something special for the holidays. Speaking of hacks, how amazing is the skirt on the cover? Learn how to make it using a basic pencil skirt from your stash. Just add (an amazingly dramatic) flounce! Make a statement with a classic shape with Ana Jankovic’s sheer-sleeved take on the shift dress – goodness! The look has definite vintage vibes but it also utterly modern. An equally stunning take on sheer layers is Meg Healy’s installment of Pattern Play. Meg teaches you how to create pants with a unique outer layer. We’re seeing sheer overlay all over the place – this hack is right on trend and perfect for your holiday look. Okay, okay, time to pick favorites: the Special Occasion Separates! The idea was this – we love a LBD and statement holiday makes. But what about beyond the holidays – are those special occasion pieces ever worn again? Separates to the rescue! We share 4 looks, 12 pieces total, that can be worn together for the holidays and then show you how to style them for everyday wear. Cake and frosting? Maybe! An amazing mermaid sequin hobo bag (from Thanks I Made Them!), tips for making pro collars, deep thoughts on fabric stash, fitting techniques for raglan sleeves, statement sleeves with the most stunning tulle cuffs…you guys, it’s good!
