Joined by expert sewist and instructor Brad Schultz, we’ll cover basics, how to pick the right technique for your fabric and project, our favorite tools, and more.

Hemming techniques with specialty feet

How do you properly cross that big seam while hemming jeans? Have you tried any high-end hems such as the blind hem or the rolled hem? And do they actually make things easier? Let’s jump in and experiment.

Follow along as Kate, Brad, and Amanda discuss:

  • Basic hemming techniques for woven and knit fabric (does anyone else need to finally make friends with their twin needle?)
  • How to sew a curved hem, especially for shirtmaking
  • Hemming jeans and pants with a hump jumper
  • How to sew a rolled hem with the Rolled Hem Foot
  • Creating a blind hem with the Blind Hem Foot

Watch Stitch Lab Episode 2: Hemming

Hemming is one of those sewing topics that doesn’t seem particularly exciting, but choosing the right technique and the right tool can make or break your project. It is often the final step in garment sewing projects, and it’s tempting to rush it. During this episode, we each discovered that we have a default technique, but it was inspiring to try other methods, especially new-to-us feet! Brad was a delight to have on the show and brought a wealth of knowledge and fun to our conversation. Enjoy!
