Give the Gift of Sewing (Coupons)
As a sewist, you can always make a handmade gift. But if you’re short of time and a special birthday or holiday is coming up, give your loved one a sewing coupon instead! Need a hem? There’s a coupon for that! An alteration? Coupon! How about a handmade garment? You guessed it, coupon!
Every sewist knows someone who can’t sew; to them, hemming a pair of pants is like climbing Mt. Everest! A quick sewing favorite might be nothing to us, but it’s so meaningful to the giftee. Just print, clip, and give! And these couldn’t be more budget-friendly—all you’re giving is time. Whether you want to give a minor alteration or a full-on custom garment, you can use our free Printable Sewing Coupons.
Valentine’s Day always seems to creep up suddenly after the holidays, so a long overdue alteration or pant hem could be just the thing your partner wants. These coupons are also fabulous to gift your friend group to show your love.
A great way to present the Handmade Garment coupon as a gift is to include some fabric swatches to help inspire the recipient to think about what they want you to make. The fabric also adds a little something extra to the envelope!
Embroider a Coupon
Another option if you don’t have a color printer—or a printer at all—is to use an embroidery machine. Here’s how to do it, step by step.
1
Using mySewnet’s embroidery software, I created a little graphic with text and designs. For the jeans, I used this jeans design. Most embroidery machines can easily add text alongside designs with various fonts.
2
Hoop some cotton fabric with stabilizer and stitch out the design on your machine.
3
Trim around the design, clip the threads, and give it a good press. You can also go around the edges with pinking shears.
4
Center the design on two pieces of denim the size of your envelope, wrong sides together, and topstitch around the edges.
5
Press in ½” around all edges of both layers of the denim fabric to the wrong side.
6
Topstitch around the outer edge close to the pressed folds. Use a gold-colored topstitching thread to mimic jeans!
7
Insert in an envelope and gift to your loved one in need of a jean alteration or hemming.
Once your gift recipient “redeems” their coupon, pass it along to someone else! These are such fun gifts to make and give, especially if you are budgeting more on gift spending for the year—you can still use your sewing machine!
