Cocktail Pillows | Style Revive Season 5, Episode 3
|Sponsored| New season, new home, new projects! Just because you can’t wear it doesn’t mean it can’t get the Style Revive treatment — sewing for the home makes your space unique and sustainable, and you can save some money along the way. In season 5 of Style Revive, Meg tackles home décor projects around her new house, including embroidered curtains, pillows, table settings, a hammock, and more. Meg’s husband, Julian, and her pet rabbit make some cameos in this fun-filled season.
Cheers to Embroidered Cocktail Pillows!
Sip & stitch is the way to go in this episode of Style Revive. Meg uses our cocktail embroidery collection to sew up outdoor accent pillows. She used basic muslin fabric that gets elevated with vibrant embroidery threads and a cute design, plus an invisible zipper for easy care and laundering. You can thrift the pillow forms and then use a protective spray on the cases to make them last through the season.
I think we can all agree that the shining star of this project is our Sip & Stitch Embroidery Design Collection. The stitched-out embroideries are fabulous as tea towels—and you know I have those planned for my kitchen as well—but I wanted all the designs on display, so I thought pillows for our outdoor firepit would be a perfect backdrop for these fun cocktail prints.
Before I cut and stitched my pillows together, I grabbed a scrap piece of my muslin fabric, hooped my stabilizer, and embroidered away!
Since I used water soluble stabilizer, after I stitched out my pieces of fabric, I threw them in the washing machine and pressed them flat and ready for cutting…
But before I cut out my pillow pieces, I needed to know my pillow dimensions. You can find pillows, and pillow forms at the thrift store to use!
Once I found my pillow, I needed to measure it. The pillow I used measured 19″ square. I added 1″ to the pillow dimensions and cut a square or rectangle that size for the front piece. I divided the lengthwise measurement in two for the back pieces and added another ½”.
Since I already embroidered my pieces of fabric, I made sure to center my design within the front square. You could also draft these dimensions on paper and use those as pattern pieces.
The first sewing step was to install the invisible zipper between the back two pieces and then stitch the front to the back. Make sure the zipper is partially open so you can flip it to the right side.
Insert your pillow forms into the cases and enjoy your fabulous, fun accent pillows! Since these will be outdoor pillows, I used Scotch Guard to make them water and fade-resistant.
These were so fun to make, and they add a party element to our backyard, where we love to entertain.
Happy Sewing!
Meg
