|Sponsored| In Stitch Lab, episode 4, we’re celebrating our love for all things buttons and buttonholes! If you’ve spent any time being intimidated by buttonholes, this episode is for you! We take a deep dive, with helpful tools and tips to make buttonholes approachable and easy. See a one-step buttonhole in action, along with the unassuming but amazing button foot, for sewing buttons on by machine. Join us for a lively discussion, words of wisdom, and fun experiments with special guest, Norris Danta Ford.

Buttonhole sewing techniques

We’ll start by discussing our love for buttons and the importance of proper button selection, as we ponder what comes first, the button or the shirt. Norris shares his tip for how to use a favorite shirt as a template for buttonhole placement and kind of blows our minds. Then it’s on to the experiments: first we’ll walk through the buttonhole foot process, then find out if it’s faster to sew a button on by hand or by machine with a friendly sew-off, and more.

Follow the lively discussion between Amanda, Norris and Meg as they cover:

  • Button selection
  • Buttonhole placement
  • Stitching buttonholes with the buttonhole foot
  • Hand stitching buttons
  • Sewing on buttons with the button foot

Amanda, here, and I have a question: Are you team buttons or zippers? Okay, you can probably be both, but we are definitely button lovers around here! While I don’t tend to be much of a collector (besides fabric!), my stash of vintage buttons has definitely grown over the past year. I love how a small detail like a button can impact the feel of a whole garment, which is also why I tend to stress about making the right decision! I also know lots of people who avoid making garments with buttons because they don’t want to make buttonholes. Is this you? It’s time to make friends with your buttonhole foot then!
