3 Gender-Neutral Sewing Patterns to Make Now
In recent years, the indie pattern world has witnessed a much-needed shift toward inclusivity and accessibility, exemplified by the expansion of gender-neutral sewing patterns. Breaking away from traditional gender norms, these patterns have emerged as a great start in fostering inclusivity and empowering sewists of all gender identities to create garments that truly reflect their individuality.
While this is by no means an exhaustive list, these three patterns are standouts in the community and come from companies that are making moves to appeal to all sewists. I highly recommend you check them out and follow them as they further push the sewing community to be better.
1. Cameron Button-Up from Helen’s Closet
The Cameron Button-Up is the classic button-up shirt with a collar and collar stand, front button placket, and chest pocket. What makes this pattern so great for everyone is the dartless boxy fit from the chest to the hips. I made this pattern for the first time recently, and I loved the ease of construction and the ability to customize it to your own style and body shape.
2 The Sunday V-Neck from Friday Pattern Co.
The Sunday V-Neck pattern is not only fantastic for all sewists, but it is FREE as well! This V-neck is a wardrobe staple that looks great on everyone. What I love about a raglan pattern is the ability to mix and match different fabrics for a unique and different look. Plus, it’s a great scrap-busting project too.
3. Negroni from Seamwork
I wanted to add another button-up shirt to the list mostly because it has such different styling while still giving you the classic button-up look. What I like about the Negroni is that it is drafted based on menswear proportions but has an accompanying blog post on adjusting the pattern to accommodate women’s proportions. I learned so much by reading the blog post.
