I took a Home Economics class in my Junior year of High School. We cooked the first half of the year and we sewed the last half of the year. I made a blue and white pillow slip and an apron to match. I’m still sewing, learning new techniques and growing in other areas of sewing (embroidery and quilting).
My grandmother taught me to sew when I was a little girl, and I started out making clothes for my Barbie dolls. I moved up to making clothes for myself eventually. When I got to College, my advisor was the head of the Costume Design Department. I took a few classes, worked on a few shows, and I was hooked – a Costume Designer was born.
I started sewing in 7th & 8th Grade Home Ec Classes in the late 1950’s where our first project was a stuffed animal and our last project was a dress. Those were made with patterns and fabrics of our own choosing with no experience at choosing patterns appropriate to our skills. We had a very patient teacher. Thank you Mrs. Bissell. I truly enjoyed sewing and over the years sewed small Christmas gifts and costumes for my children but never took another class until I started quilting in the year 2000. Your pod cast was lots of fun to listen to and makes me want to actually try to sew clothing. Thanks Meg, Amanda and Kate. I’ll be listening again.
Congrats on your first podcast! I did a lot of crafting and hand sewing while growing up, but it was mostly the vast creative opportunity that sewing clothing offered that got me really interested. My mom sewed for us, growing up, but it wasn’t until I was an adult living on my own that I really explored it for myself. Obviously it led to a long and enduring passion, given that I’m still working full-time as a patternmaker ten years after starting Oliver + S!
