About this Sew-Along:
Coats can be quite intimidating to sew yourself, but with a little help and the perfect pattern you can easily create a new couture coat for the winter in no time with this sew-along! A pea coat is a versatile style that suits many different body types, and the BurdaStyle Pea Coat pattern is a classic – but with a twist. It features a waistline seam that allows for a feminine A-line skirt attachment and raglan sleeves. Finished off with a collar, this classic will be your new go-to coat pattern.
In this sew-along, Meg Healy will teach you so much more than just how to stitch this coat together. You’ll learn useful tips for extracting lining pieces from BurdaStyle patterns and hemming using fusible hem tape. You’ll also learn the process of inserting a lining with a collar and facing. Not sure which fabrics and notions you’ll need to sew your own coat? That is also covered in this sew-along complete with an interfacing guide.
The BurdaStyle plus size Long Pea Coat is also included so everyone can sew a coat for themselves! This pattern features a long hemline for extra warmth and back godets for extra swing. The collar on this style is a bit more dramatic and also offers opportunity for some fabric and print paneling. The sewing process for the plus size version is comparable to the first, so Meg will just show you the trickiest construction components including the inseam pocket with welt.
What You’ll Learn:
- Lining pattern pieces and insertion into a coat
- How to sew inseam pockets with linings and welt
- Inserting godets into seams
- How to install raglan sleeves
- Collar applications two ways with facings and linings
Who Should Register:
- Intermediate to advanced sewists wanting to learn about sewing intricate dress details
- Sewists both plus size and standard size wanting to make themselves a coat for the season

Excellent course, some parts Were difficult for me as I am learning to sew my own and a few notions must be easy or basic and the video is going quite fast. Fortunately Meg keeps an eye on us and replies to questions and gives tips. Thank you so much.

My coat turned out great. Not a big fan of the speedy video but I recommend the sew-alongs that BurdaStyle puts out as I always learn something new.

This course shows how easy it is to sew larger projects. I learned from a master seamstress in the late 80’s and find these instructions to be a fantastic refresher course.
