Description
A fast and fun way to change the look of a simple cardigan sweater is to add a big showy flower using bias binding, fabric scraps, and a decorative button. Search your sewing box for colorful notions just waiting to transform an ordinary sweater into the cutest sweater around.
Finished Size: Flower appliqué shown is about 4 1/4" x 4 1/2" (11 x 11.5 cm)
Required Materials:
- Lightweight cardigan sweater (shown: medium gray)
- Two 2" x 3 1/2" (5 x 9 cm) scraps of cotton print fabric for leaves (see Notes; shown: red, pink, and orange floral print cotton)
- 8" (20.5 cm) of 1/2" (1.3 cm) wide hem tape or similar for flower stem (such as Wrights Soft & Easy Hem Tape; shown: light gray)
- 50" (127 cm) of 1/2" (1.3 cm) wide bias tape piping (such as Wrights Bias Tape Maxi Piping; shown: off-white)
- One 7/8" (2.3 cm) crochet circle or other small, flat decorative element for flower center (see Notes; optional; shown: offwhite crochet circle cut from a length of crochet trim)
- One 13 mm (1/2") decorative button for flower center (shown: red)
- Coordinating or contrasting sewing thread (see Notes; shown: red)
- Sharp pointy scissors (such a embroidery scissors)
- Handsewing needle
- Pinking shears (see Notes; optional)
- Measuring tape
- Dressmaker’s carbon and tracing wheel (optional, for flower design transfer)
- Tailor’s chalk
- Zigzag presser foot for your sewing machine
