What You Will Learn:

Part 1: Mastering Machine Embroidery Tools

All machine embroidery uses the same basic tools. This section teaches how to use and learn to combine these important tools to meet the needs of every unique combination of design and fabric.

  • Chapter 1: Stabilizers – learn which stabilizers, where, and how much are needed for successful embroidery. Plus when to use specialty stabilizers for embroidery with special needs.
  • Chapter 2: Needles – understand the difference between needle types and how to pair the needle with the fabric for perfect stitch-out every time.
  • Chapter 3: Threads – Threads are the “paint” of our embroidery artwork. Learn about the different types and weights of threads and how to use them effectively. Plus a look at choosing effective color “stories” to create beautiful embroidery.
  • Chapter 4: Hoops – Learn about the wide variety of hoops available and how to use them. Also explore alternative strategies when faced with unhoopable embroidery projects.

Part 2: Mastering Machine Embroidery Design

Every embroidery design features a combination of stitch types and densities that must be evaluated to create a successful project.

  • Chapter 1: Understanding Embroidery Designs – How to interpret design density and stitch types to determine the right combination of stitching tools for success.
  • Chapter 2: Evaluating Design Compatibility – How to determine whether the design will work with your intended fabric, stitch area, and threads.
  • Chapter 3 Design Planning and Layout – Learn to use or create special tools to make planning single or multiple hooped designs a breeze.

Part 3: Mastering Machine Embroidery Stitch-out

Planning your embroidery is only the first stage of a successful embroidery. Learn how to put your careful embroidery plans to work by preparing and stitching your project with accuracy and skill.

  • Chapter 1: Preparing Garments/Projects – Learn to evaluate and prepare your embroidery project to determine the best way to successfully create your embroidered design.
  • Chapter 2: Design Placement – Learn to use a variety of tools and techniques to ensure perfect placement of your designs on your projects, whether in a single hoop or spread over a multi-hoop design.

Part 4: Specialty Techniques

Modern machine embroidery is so much more than plain stitching. In this section you will explore a variety of specialty embroidery techniques for uniquely beautiful creations. Most of these techniques can be performed by any embroidery machine, but some require specialty tools that will vary by manufacturer.

  • Chapter 1: Lace – Creating both free-standing and fabric-backed lace.
  • Chapter 2: Cutwork – How to create cutwork using both traditional methods and modern cutwork needles.
  • Chapter 3: Applique – Explore both applied and reverse applique embroidery techniques for beautiful results.
  • Chapter 4: Thread Velvet – See how specially digitized designs can be cut to create a uniquely textured effect that looks like velvet.
  • Chapter 5: Needle Felting – Learn how to use special barbed “needles” to create decorative effects.
  • Chapter 6: Couching – Add extra texture to embroidered designs by using specialty feet to stitch down heavy threads and yarn to the surface of the embroidery.
  • Chapter 7: Specialty attachments – Explore exciting new embroidery technology that allows embroidery to be created with ribbons, yarn, and even beads!

Optional Supplies:

  • Computerized embroidery machine, either stand-alone or embroidery capable sewing machine*
  • Machine embroidery software if needed to communicate with your machine or optionally to edit designs
  • Selection of machine embroidery stabilizers
  • Embroidery thread
  • Needles, either embroidery or topstitch, 80/12 or 90/14 are the most commonly used sizes
  • Fabric for embroidering
  • Other suggested tools will be covered in class

*This class relates to any embroidery machine – learning to operate your particular embroidery machine is a personal homework assignment.

Katrina Walker began her machine embroidery adventure in 1998. As a devoted fashion sewist she was immediately enthralled with all the creative possibilities. Since then her work as an embroiderer and a design digitizer are frequently featured in sewing magazines and advertising campaigns. She regularly shares her embroidery expertise with Creative Machine Embroidery magazine and is a featured embroidery instructor for SewDaily.com. As a sewist and embroiderer Katrina is a PFAFF brand ambassador, national educator for PFAFF and Husqvarna Viking, and a Sulky Sewcialite.
