Description

Learn all about stretch ratios, ease reductions and fabric weights. You will also learn how to construct 4 projects including a knit top, skirts, dress and a swimsuit. All patterns are included with workshop purchase!

After taking this workshop, you will be able to identify a single knit jersey, a double knit jersey, tricot, and other types of stretch knits. You will be able to make the distinction between a top weight and a bottom weight knit. Dyanne will work through some examples of fabric weights, converting grams per square meter to ounces per square yard. We will determine fabric weights by using our senses and comparing different fabrics.

Difficulty Level:

This workshop is intended for beginner to advanced sewers. Sewers will be introduced to the different kinds of materials and available in stretch knits. Construct ion projects including the swimsuit, skirt and knit top are categorized as “easy”. The sheath dress is “intermediate” in skill level. This workshop will expose sewers to working on projects with various amounts of stretch. This class will be especially beneficial for those who are interested in constructing dance wear and active wear with their sergers.

Workshop Materials:

  • Paper scissors
  • Fabric shears
  • C-thru ruler
  • Sewing gauge
  • Mechanical pencil
  • Patterns ( included with workshop purchase)
  • Chaco pen or tailor’s chalk or Dritz Magic Pen
  • 3/4 cones of Tex 27 thread in ground color for all styles
  • Pins and/or wonder clips

Expert: Dyanne Marte

Dyanne Marte first began sewing and designing at the age of 12. She loved sewing so much that she changed her major from architecture to fashion while attending the Savannah College of Art and Design. At SCAD, she fell in love with knits while taking a course on designing active wear knits. After graduation, she moved to New York City to work for such companies as NY & Co., J. Crew and Doncaster where she held positions in design, sourcing and development. While working, she studied design management at Pratt Institute.
