Sew a pretty maxi dress with a flirty ruffle, perfect for summer frolicking. Join Amanda Carestio and Kate Zaynard, the editors behind Sew News magazine and hosts of the Sew & Tell podcast, to learn how in this sew-along.
The Manassa Maxi dress has a fully-lined bodice with an attached ruffle. The upper bodice and midriff sit close to the body, then the gathered skirt falls away to give you plenty of room to move. With its spaghetti straps and loose skirt, you’ll stay breezy and cool on hot summer days.
Follow along with Kate and Amanda and sew this dreamy dress. Start with tips for selecting the right fabric, then learn about cutting and working with knit fabrics. The construction is simple, but results in a lined bodice with fully enclosed seams. First you’ll make the upper bodice and baste the ruffle and straps in place, then finish the upper edge with the lining. The midriff comes next, enclosing the seam allowances. Finally, you’ll gather the full skirt onto the midriff. A quick hem, and you’re ready to wear it out.

- 54”-60” stretch jersey (2 3/4 yards for 2XS-M; 3 3/4 yards for L-4XL)
- 1/2 yard of chiffon fabric for ruffle and straps (optional)
- Size 70/10 or 80/12 ballpoint sewing machine needle
- All-purpose thread
- Removable fabric marker
