Basting
Uses long, loose stitches to hold something in place temporarily. To baste by machine, use the longest straight stitch length available on your machine. To baste by hand, use stitches at least 1⁄4" (6 mm) long. Use a contrasting thread to make the stitches easier to spot for removal.
