Grab your sewing kit, choose playful fabrics, and whip up fun pieces like a dog sweater, poofy skirt, or fierce leopard print pants. Get ready to slay fall fashion with our DIY guide for patterns, fabric inspo, and more!

As a creative, I’m totally obsessed with Pinterest—it’s one of my favorite apps! So, I was super excited to check out their latest trend report for fall 2024. I love seeing what the community is searching for and pinning, and I got so inspired by all the cool ideas popping up!

Animal Print

Animal print is all the rage for fall 2024, bringing a wild mix of boldness and timeless flair to your wardrobe. Plus, it’s super easy to hop on the trend! Just grab some animal print fabric, stitch together your favorite pattern, and voilà—you’ve got a fierce, DIY statement piece in no time.

While animal print is hot across the board this fall, animal print pants are especially having a moment. I’ve had this lightweight stretch twill with a fierce animal print tucked away in my fabric stash for ages, and it feels like the perfect time to finally bring it to life!

Along with dusting off my animal print fabric, I pulled out my sketching supplies to mock up my new pants. The Pagosa Pants are an all-time favorite pattern, and I’m obsessed with the silhouette, so they’re the perfect base for this project.

Cargo pockets and pants are still a major fashion staple—and I don’t have a single pair! So, I’m giving my Pagosa Pants a makeover by extending the hemline to the ankle and drafting a side cargo pocket. To finish them off, I’ll add a casing with cording and a cord stopper to cinch the hems for that perfect tailored touch. I can’t wait to tackle this project… just in time for PANTS MONTH on Sew Daily (which is October).

Here are a few more animal print sewing patterns you can whip up to strut into fall in fierce style. If you already have a pants project on the go, why not make a matching cardigan and bag!

Dog Sweater

Novelty sweaters with quirky motifs—think lobsters, dogs, and other playful designs—are a must-have this season. The best part? This is a super fun and easy project! You can either upcycle an old sweater or make one from scratch, then personalize it by adding your own embroidery. I’m especially obsessed with our Puppy Love embroidery design collection for this—it adds the perfect touch of whimsy and charm to any sweater.

Puffy Long Layering

Puffy coats, oversized skirts, and long baggy layers are also dominating fall 2024, creating a cozy yet effortlessly chic look that’s all about comfort and style. Upcycle puffer coats into other garments like skirts and accessories.

In addition, athletic jerseys are making a sporty splash in fall 2024 outfits as well – their bold graphics, breathable fabrics, and loose fits make them perfect for layering, adding a fun, nostalgic twist to this season’s fashion. So make sure to keep a lookout at the thrift store for one!

This trend is super easy to achieve with pieces you likely already own—just layer them up, especially by pairing dresses over skirts! But if you’re feeling inspired to create something fresh, here are some fantastic sewing pattern options to spark your creativity.

Cozy Crafts

Fall is the perfect time to get cozy! Gather your friends for fun crafting sessions—think DIY projects, friendship bracelets, or starting a book club to share your favorite reads over hot drinks. Explore a new craft together, whether it’s knitting, painting, or pottery, and enjoy creating lasting memories and handmade treasures.

Here are a few complimentary patterns to spark your creativity this fall! Fire up your embroidery machine and try an in-the-hoop project like this cozy bookmark, perfect for your fall reads. Or, dive into fabric printing to create the ultimate market totes for gathering fresh fall harvests at the farmers market. The possibilities are endless!

This article was such a blast to put together, inspired by the Pinterest trend report and all the ways you can sew the trends yourself! Now it’s time for me to piece together my Pagosa pants, because if there’s one thing you need to make for fall 2024, it’s definitely a pair of bold animal print pants.

Happy Sewing!
