One of our favorite parts of each issue of Creative Machine Embroidery is the “In the Hoop” column. In-the-hoop projects are so fun — it’s really interesting to see how Lisa Archer, our columnist, designs the projects to go together without having to remove them from the hoop.

Our in-the-hoop project in the Nov/Dec issue is this adorable mini Christmas stocking. We like it because it can do double duty! It was originally designed to be a gift card holder — it has a perfectly-sized pocket on the back, ideal for hanging a gift card on the tree. In addition, with a little personalization, it also makes a great gift tag.

To make a personalized mini-stocking gift tag, embroider the recipient’s name on the stocking cuff. If you’re comfortable with embroidery software and how in-the-hoop designs stitch out, this can be done in a copy of the design file, placing it so it embroiders between steps five and six. But if you don’t have access to embroidery software or aren’t comfortable altering the design, it’s easy to do by embroidering the cuff fabric in advance.

Design the embroidered name so it measures no more than 2 1/4” wide by 3/4” high to fit on the cuff with a comfortable margin. The Hopscotch Alphabet, available on shopsewitall.com, is the perfect height for this purpose, though it may require some resizing to make longer names fit lengthwise. Make sure to choose a solid or low-volume fabric for the stocking cuff to ensure that the name is easy to read!
