Summer’s still in full swing, but here at Creative Machine Embroidery our minds have already turned to fall. We’re so excited to show you the new September/October issue, which is chock full of seasonal goodness!

On the cover, you’ll find the “spooky” Towels of Terror. We love the effect created by this design, which stitches freestanding lace that overlaps the edge of a towel to great effect. They’re the perfect addition to a kitchen or bathroom as Halloween approaches. Find both the bat and spider web designs at cmemag.com/freebies through the end of October. We recommend stitching up the spider web in glow-in-the-dark thread for an extra touch!

Don’t you love this gorgeous cape? Its pretty orange shade is perfect for fall, and the delicate embroidery at the arm openings give it an elegant touch. It’s a great way to add a touch of embroidery to a unique transitional overpiece.

Speaking of adding embroidery to things, have you noticed the trend of embroidery on jeans pockets? We have, and we love it! If you love it too, our “Sweet Jeans” article is for you. In it, we discuss various methods for adding embroidery for jeans pockets, including appliqué, taking the pocket off, and — if you’re a hardcore sewist — making your own jeans. We all got to find embroidery designs to demonstrate, which was fun. Which one (or ones) appeals to you?

Our In-The-Hoop project this month is a cute apple charm that can be attached to a backpack, lunchbag or pencil case. It also makes a great teacher gift! It’s designed to be made with a non-raveling material, like vinyl or cork, so it’s a great way to test out a new material that you may not be so sure about. Get the design at cmemag.com/freebies through Oct. 31.

Of course, just because we have a regular “in the hoop” column doesn’t mean we don’t feature other in-the-hoop projects, and this issue has one that I absolutely love. Check out this adorable owl necklace, which is stitched in the hoop and then constructed using eyelets and jump rings. I especially love how much variation is possible just from changing up the material and thread choices. This one’s intended for no-fray material as well, so here’s a use for all the non-apple-colored cork or vinyl that catches your eye. If large necklaces like this aren’t your thing, consider hanging them from a light fixture or curtain rod instead for a fun, fall-y addition to your décor.

Need a last-minute costume? Check out the CME exclusive Dress Up Play Embroidery design collection. The pieces, including devil horns, bat wings, monster bolts, animal ears, antlers and a crown, are designed to be sewn or glued onto a headband using the included tab pieces. Simply stitch onto water-soluble stabilizer, rinse, allow to dry and attach and you have a lovely lace costume piece. The pieces are versatile — consider stitching the bat wings to the back of a hoodie or attaching the bolts to a ribbon that can be tied around the neck. The animal ears where designed to be generic enough to represent several different animals, such as various cats, a wolf or a fox, depending on the color you choose. The devil horns are available as a free download from cmemag.com/freebies until Oct. 31, and the whole collection can be found on shopsewitall.com.

There’s a lot more to explore in the issue, including a fun godet skirt, embroidered pet collars, the basics of digitizing, and more! Check it out on newsstands now through October 15 and on shopsewitall.com indefinitely.
