Embroider Masks for Kids: 3 Free Machine Embroidery Designs
Getting kids excited about back-to-school looks a bit different this year, as it also means, for in-person learning, getting them excited about wearing fabric masks. There’s no magic solution for that, but a cute mask can make the adjustment easier. We’ve developed three fabric mask embroidery designs – whiskers, mustache and dino mouth – to dress up kids’ masks with a bit of fun and whimsy.
Download the machine designs and read on for tips on how to incorporate the designs into your DIY fabric masks.

These designs work best with the rectangular, pleated-style mask, but any mask with a single center-front fabric panel should work. Or customize a premade mask using these embroidery designs. For more information on mask sewing, check out our mask pattern roundup, many of which include patterns with kids sizing, and information on how to fit a mask pattern to your face.
You can choose to hoop a premade mask with a sticky stabilizer, or first embroider the mask fabric before sewing for a more comfortable backing. Here we’ve loaded the cute whiskers design on classic white cotton using black thread.
Whiskers can suggest many different animals, including bunnies! Here you can have fun with your mask backing to match your design – just make sure it is a suitable mask fabric like 100% cotton.
Embroider all three of these quirky designs and cut the pattern piece from the stitched fabric. And remember that they are not just for kids! Try cutting some adult sized masks (6” x 9”, for the classic pleated one) to bring a little joy to your next grocery shopping visit – and you can even match your little one’s masks.
