Hand embroidery is enjoying a resurgence, and I’m here for it! I’ve been a cross-stitcher since the late 80s, and with my sewing and knitting experience, I think I would really enjoy the creative possibilities of embroidery.

There are many reasons why embroidery is becoming increasingly popular—here are my top three:

1

The creative potential. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to make something unique, embroidery has a range of possibilities that will satisfy any artist. With endless colors, stitches, and designs, embroidery gives you the chance to express your creativity in a unique way. A sampler like this is a great way to start.

2

Hand embroidery’s calming effect. As a form of slow stitching, embroidery can provide an experience of peace and mindfulness within a busy lifestyle. I’m all for a hobby that promotes relaxation and calmness. Just watching this embroidery mending video has me ready for a nap.

3

Embroidery is incredibly fulfilling. As makers, we know that there’s nothing much better than spending time creating something with our hands. With embroidery, there are no limits to what you can create or achieve. From small projects like bookmarks to larger works such as wall hangings, embroidery is a craft that can bring you a sense of accomplishment. If this isn’t aspirational, I don’t know what is!

So, if you’re looking for a relaxing new hobby, hand embroidery might be just what you need. If you need more inspiration, take a look at the amazing embroidery reels on Instagram!

Happy hand sewing!
