Having a ball(gown) with fusible web

The image to the right is my first fusible appliqué project. It is a dress from a block created by Cynthia Frenette for Quiltmaker's 100 Block series. I of course am a sucker for anything with a dress on it. I love Cynthia's version and her fabric choices.

Here's a picture of hers that appeared in the Quiltmaker magazine issue Volume 9.

Mine is made from scrap vintage fabric. I had never done fusible web appliqué before. I could envision making several of these appliqué dresses just for fun or it would make a cute quilt.

Here is another project I'm working on using fusible web. It's going to be a pincushion.

Most fusible web appliqué projects have the same steps. But always read the directions. Here is basically how I did my projects.

  • Trace the design on the paper backing of the fusible web. You may need to reverse the image.
  • Place adhesive on back of fabric to be bonded.
  • Cut to size or shape needed
  • Cut out the design but leave the paper attached.
  • Iron the cut out piece of paper-backed fusible web to the wrong side of your appliqué fabric let  cool.
  • Cut the applique to size, using the lines drawn on the paper.
  • Peel off the paper backing.
  • Iron the fused fabric into position

It's pretty simple.

Do you use applique in your projects? Do you do it all by hand or do you use products like the MistyFuse? I like the fusing part, it sure does cut down on time and makes it look absolutely perfect.

I'm that type of seamstress, just give me a short cut that works and I'm all over it. Let me know your experiences with fusible web. Do you use it in garments how do you like it?
