Are You as Swamped by the Holidays as I Am?

Okay, somehow the December holidays got the best of all of us. I am assuming it's because they are so fast on the heels by Thanksgiving, but just last week I had only received about three holiday cards. I am married into a big Italian family who take their holiday cards very seriously, so two to three dozen would be have been more usual.

The easy Cityscape Tote by
Amy Struckmeyer is a sure gift hit.

I began checking with other friends and family, and they, too, had not gotten more than a couple of cards. Then suddenly this week, we were swamped by cards. Need I add that I have yet to get my own out?

If that's the case with cards, then you can imagine where I stand with gifts. It's not good.

But there is one thought that gives me comfort. I know that when my back is totally against the wall holiday gift-giving-wise, and I can't bear the thought of fighting the mall crowds … I can always make a bag.

Bags make the best gifts. Who doesn't love them? Fit doesn't matter for the recipient, and they are among the quickest  items to stitch up, as well as a great way to showcase your favorite stash scraps. They are useful and beautiful at the same time … the perfect companion for any number of daily activities from going to market to going out on the town. And no matter how many bags someone might have, there's always room for one more, especially if they fold away for easy storage.

So while I can't come to your house and help you finish your gifts list, nor, as much as I may wish, can you come to mine, I can give you this gift of the perfect gift idea, in my opinion: bags!

For dozens of bag projects, check out the digitial download of the Bag It! Premiun Collection in the Sew Daily Shop.. You can purchase it online and start sewing within minutes. Now that's instant relief.

What is your favorite go-to item for gifts when you are running behind? I would love to know!

On behalf of the whole Stitch team, I want to wish you a very happy holiday. And may you never have too many bags!

Happy stitching!

  1. I have THREE bags going right now at the sewing machine (almost done)! Its practically like a tradition with me… I realize someone “new” on my list, or someone else is coming for dinner, etc. I can add them to the gift list fairly easy & quick. And I can make 1, 2, or 3, in just about the same amount of time, assembly line style! Bags!

Well, the truth be told, I am almost *always* behind! With six adult children with spouses (they get token gifts), and nine grandchildren and counting, I decided to make all of the grand children’s birthday and Christmas gifts. By the end of the year, I got my husband to get on board; he makes the gifts mainly for the boys. This really reduces expenditures while giving a quality product. I made it just in time for Christmas last year, but throughout all of the birthdays in 2013 (There are none in December! Whew!) I was mostly late, some more than others.) The G’kids, ages 11 though 9mos (too young to care), are very understanding, as one sibling, concerning her birthday, told her sister, that she had to wait a long time (that project was simply uncooperative!) but it was worth it! The kids know that, in the end, they will get a gift that they will love, especially since they have options and chose the gift . Exactly how it will look is the fun part! I must say I love it when they tell me that it looks, “store bought!”

This year, the “local” grand children will get their gifts on time, but the those living in another state, must wait a tad longer.

My husband’s projects are getting there. My sewing projects are on the work table. I am currently at the tail end of putting them all together. I like them so much I think I will make one for myself…after the holidays.:))

  3. I usually go for hot pads/pot holders. They are a great way to use up scraps and so fast to make. I try to keep a healthy supply of insulbrite in my stash at all times!
