Free Bonus Project: Dupioni Silk Table Runner

by Tricia Waddell

Combine traditional fabric piecing techniques with nontraditional quilt fabrics. Mixing colors and textures and varying the sizes of the patchwork pieces provides more visual interest and allows you to customize the runner.

I am making this pattern as a Christmas present and I am already having some problems with the measurements:

  • How can I get a 63.5" piece of interfacing from a yard?  I thought that perhaps I was supposed to cut two 13.5" pieces and sew them end-to-end (even though the instructions don't say that), but the sew-in interfacing I bought is not wide enough for that.  I suppose I could have purchased a "non-standard" width interfacing but the instructions do not specify a width.  So I am headed back to the fabric store to buy 2 yards of interfacing.
  • I bought 5 different pieces of beautiful silks, each 1/8 of a yard.  But how on Earth am I supposed to cut them into squares of varying lengths (6.5 x 7.75, 7.25 x 7.75 and so on) when the fabric is only 4.5 inches wide??  I wish the instructions had told me to buy enough yardage!

I really want to make this (I think it will be beautiful when it is done and I have invested quite a bit of money in some beautiful, expensive fabrics), but I am afraid of what other problems I'll run into...so far I haven't successfully gotten past Step 2!  I am not a complete novice sewer but I don't have the ability to visualize measurements etc just from reading the steps...which is why I was counting on your materials list to be accurate.

I guess if nothing else, this is a heads up to others who might download this pattern...you will want to buy more materials than are listed!

This will be my first project to work with  silk.  Have always stayed in my comfort zone.  I also downloaded your booklet on the slik guide, which I find interesting.  Thank you for all the free information and projects.
