C.Donna asked 7-28-11 how to determine if fabric is silk. Ravel a few threads and place them on a fire proof surface, such as a glass cutting board. Touch the thread with a lit match and smell the smoke. If it smells like burning human hair- it is silk.
Thank you! This looks like a fantastic addition to my sewing reference binder. I'm just getting into crazy quilting after being predominately an apparel sewist for decades. Now I'll be able to "speak silk" when I look for those bits of awesome fabric to use in CQ!
