Flat-fell seams are perfect for protecting the raw edges of silk fabrics from abrasion.  Here, Katrina Walker, the author of the article Sewing With Silk (Stitch, Fall 2010), shows how to sew these simple seams in this step-by-step video tutorial.

When I learned to flat felt seams so many years ago it was sew, cut, fold and sew again. This is so much easier.  I do make little boys clothes and will start using this technique.  Thank you!! Cheryl

Ms. Walker, thank you for the tutorial.  I'm a beginner in sewing and have been watching many tutorials.  This seam has a similarity to the french seam; is that correct?
