Hey my name is Caity E. and I'm from Bartlesville, OK (originally from Kentucky). I just took a sewing class tonight (that goes on for the next 3 weeks) and I am having a ball! I have done a couple simple projects under my mom's tutelage (she's amazing) but quickly got bored because I was too young to appreciate it and also because I am genetically unable to learn from my mother.
Now that I have a 2 year old and I stay at home with her, I realized quickly I need a hobby besides knitting, Zumba, and church. i'm not used to not having a job (not that being a SAHM isn't a job but you know what I mean) - so when Abby is napping or we're not out and she's otherwise immersed in something she doesn't want Mommy in on (she's really independent and doesn't like me playing kitchen with her - probably because she instinctively knows I can't cook well), I'd like to have something to do - there's only so many things to clean in a day.
Anyway - I'm really super excited to start and really happy that I'll be able to make my friends some quality Christmas gifts this year. Doing some cool "one yard wonder" gifts for friends works SO much better than churning out scarves like a madwoman - I like to knit at a slow pace and I'd like to sew at a faster pace, but still not feel pressure from either.
That's about it from me - hope you enjoyed my mini-novel :)
That's awesome, Caity! I hope you post some of your projects here!
Thanks! Went to Hobby Lobby today and got my notions and whatnot. What exactly is selvage? That's the pretty edge of the fabric, right? And single thickness is pretty much just one piece of fabric, right?
The selvage is the long edge of the fabric, which is woven more tightly that the regular fabric. Single thickness usually refers to layout of pattern pieces, meaning you don't fold the fabric to make a double thichness.
