I appreciate advice on which sewing machine to buy with embroidery features such as lettering and simple designs templates. I presently have a 20 year old electric Brother with a 14 stitch feature.

The first thing to do is write down what you want from the embroidery machine - will you use the letters and numbers, what type of embroidery do you want to do - hooped automatic or regular press button and stitch type.  When you have decided you need to go out and test sew with different makes of machine, to see what you feel most comfortable with and how easy you will find it to use.  Does the company provide lessons in with the price?  Do they have a user friendly support system provided free or at little cost.  Don't make the mistake of buying the first one you see, check out all the best brands and research their reliability online.  If you search each machine online, you might pick up on any faults that a particular machine has, then you would be able to eliminate any that have persistent faults.  But most of all, enjoy shopping and researching the machines, it will pay dividends in the long run, when you have the ideal machine for your needs.  There are some great ones out there, have fun.
