Looking back over the past year of blog posts, there have been great articles about sewing patterns. I was scrolling through the selection to see what I could curate for a sewing pattern blog post round-up, and I was very impressed by the offerings. It would be a shame for this great information to drift to the bottom of the blogosphere ocean, so here they are, back for a second appearance!
- Ready, Set, Sew!: Kicking off the new year last year, former Stitch editor Tricia Waddell wrote an excellent post on the advantages of digital patterns and how to use them. I tried out a digital pattern over the holidays from the Stitch Gifts 2011 issue (the Potluck Take Along by Melissa Frantz. Made five. They were a HUGE hit.). It was really easy to use the digital pattern, as Tricia explains, and if like me, you have a sewing store cabinet's worth of patterns, it also saves space.
- Sew Patterns for the New Generation: This is an inspiring essay from online editor Cate Prato about the enthusiasm of her 15-year-old daughter Meredith's discovery of sewing. As my mom says, some of us are born to sew, but you never know when you are going to discover it. Hearing about Meredith's quickly ignited love of sewing just gives me a little lift. Hey, if 15-year-olds are picking up sewing with a passion, how bad can the world be after all, right?!
- Three Easy Ways to Customize a Skirt Pattern: One of the reasons we all sew is to have something that is 100% original, like no other, right? But if you've found a pattern that you love, you probably want to use it again and again. I love this post by Tricia that talks about how you can play with prints, texture and fabric to add a whole new level of originality.
- Customizing Bag Sewing Patterns: And while you're in the customizing mode, bags are another great way to add some zip to your look. Learn about how you can use applique, contrasting fabrics, patchwork and vintage textiles to pep up a purse.
I hope you enjoy revisiting these pattern posts from 2011. Here's some exciting news: The patterns from the Stitch Summer 2011 issue are now on sale in the Sew Daily shop and add to your own digital sewing pattern collection!
