- 1⁄2 yard of terry cloth
- 1 package of ready-made piping
- thread: all-purpose and polyester
- stuffing (such as Nature-Fil Bamboo Fiber)
- tear-away stabilizer
- heat-removable topper
- piping foot
- built-in machine embroidery letters
TIP: If you don’t have an embroidery machine, hand embroider the letters using Perle cotton.
From the terry cloth, cut two 16″x17″ rectangles. Hoop one rectangle. Choose a phrase for the pillow and load the letters into the embroidery machine. Stack the words, if necessary, to fit within a 4″ square. Hoop one terry cloth rectangle and a piece of tear-away stabilizer. Float a square of heat-removable stabilizer over the fabric. Baste the design perimeter in the hoop to secure the topper. Embroider the design.
Remove the basting stitches and tear away the stabilizer. Melt away the remaining topper, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Fold the embroidered rectangle in half widthwise with right sides together, centering the design in the fold. Download and print two Love Note Pillow Patterns; cutout. Pin one pillow pattern on the terry cloth fold; cut out the heart. Repeat to cut another heart from the reserved rectangle.
Using a piping foot, stitch the piping raw edge to the embroidered heart raw edge with right sides together. Overlap the piping ends and position them in opposite directions; stitch. Clip the corners.
From the terry cloth, cut one pocket (from the pocket cutting line to the heart lower edge). Stitch piping to the pocket upper edge with raw edges aligned.
Fold the piping raw edge to the pocket wrong side; topstitch approximately 1⁄8” from the piping.
Pin the pocket to the backing heart with both right sides facing up; baste.
Position the embroidered heart and the pocket heart right sides together, aligning all edges; pin. Stitch, using a piping foot, leaving a 3″ opening for turning.
Turn the pillow right side out and stuff it through the opening. Slipstitch the opening closed.
What a cute and easy (and free) machine embroidery Valentine’s Day Project.
Happy V Day!
