Studio Tips from Ty Pennington

Ty Pennington in his studio - I love the colorful and inspirational wall of swatches!

From the Screen to Your Next Project

Confession time: I was OBSESSED with the TV show Trading Spaces. The idea of letting your neighbors decorate your house while you decorate theirs was catchy enough to get me watching, but add in great designers (Genevieve and Vern were always my favorites), stressful time limits, and occasionally crazy design ideas (remember the episode when Hildi covered all the walls in the homeowners' room with straw?!), the show was a recipe for success. Oh yeah, and let's not forget one talented, funny, and charming carpenter, Ty Pennington. Ty was a hit on Trading Spaces, and many watchers followed him when he moved on to host Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, a remodel show full of feel-good stories that always make me cry.

While it was obvious from his work on TV that Ty has a great eye for design, I was still impressed to learn that not only does he have furniture, bedding, and home decor lines, he's also recently released Ty Pennington Impressions, a line of fabric with Westminster Fibers. We included a short write-up on the new fabric line in the Spring issue of Stitch, and when the photos came across my desk, I was wowed! The designs are inspired by photographs Ty has taken on his travels, and each is based on patterns he created by hand using hand-made woodblock stamps. The patterns are warm, earthy, and organic, with a fabulous global feel.

I was also really excited when I saw Ty on the cover of the new issue of Studios. Editor Cate Prato was lucky enough to sit down with Ty and talk to him about his inspiration and his studio. Here's a snapshot of their conversation:

Cate Prato: Why do you think having a studio is important?

Ty Pennington: I could say that it's a necessary space for organizing my design tools and resources, but the truth is I just like having somewhere that is for the sole purpose of creative thinking. Don't get me wrong, I have a man cave where I go to unwind and hang out with the guys, but the studio is different. It's there that I take the things that have inspired me during my time away from home and pull everything together in my mind. The photos, the sketches, the swatches, the trinkets - all the things I connect together to come up with my designs.

Ty created fabric motifs by experimenting with hand-stamping.

CP: What types of projects do you work on in your studio?

TP: The studio for me is about conception. I create a lot of patterns - for wall coverings, for fabrics, for large art installations - and that's done in the studio. But most of the actual building or making of things I do outside my own home or, if I'm experimenting with something maybe it's in my backyard. For instance, when I conceived the designs for the fabric line a lot of the work was done on the computer in the studio where I could quickly access my photos and color decks. But once I had in mind what patterns I wanted, I took it to the backyard where I did some experiments using paint - trying out different shapes with colors on canvas.

CP: When you were working on your fabric designs, did you find yourself thinking of what you would use each pattern for, or was it purely a design project?

TP: No, I absolutely did not think about what each pattern could be used for, but neither was it simply a design project. I took a lot of time considering how the designs would work on the fabrics - movement in fabric is different than if, for instance, I'd put the same design on a wall covering. But thinking, "Oh, this is great for a pillow" or "What if someone makes a baby quilt of this" was not part of my process. In fact, that's the fun of doing the fabric line. I can't wait to see what people come up with then they interpret my designs for their own use.

CP: What is your #1 home studio organization tip?

TP: Edit your stuff! If you have seen it done before, get rid of it. I have so many magazines and books that for me it makes sense to go through them and snap a pic of the things I like in them, download those into a file, and then donate the actual mag to a library or send it to be recycled. Stacks and stacks of stuff don't make you more creative.

Happy sewing!

I would use some of these bright, fun fabrics to either make a bag as I've really been getting into bags lately or perhaps a vest or jacket as I've been starting the design process in my head for some clothing. I'd love to make something new to take on a trip to Canada we're doing soon and a quilt retreat I'm going to there, all the way from Australia! Yay!

P.S. Our family have been keen fans of Ty ever since Extreme Makover, Home Edition showed her in OZ on Foxtel.

I also see my granddaughter's room with her bed covered in ruffles of the oranges and pinks with matching canopy and large pillows coordinating with the bulky comforter.

Beautiful, stunning, gorgeous!!  I would love win!  Happy Sewing, Pamie G.

Truthfully I don't know what I would make with the fabric. I acquire fabric in many ways and then decide what to make with it. It is a rare occasion that I start with a pattern and go in a straight line to a finished object. I usually start with the fabric and am inspired.

The fabrics are indeed stunning.  Colors that I use and love.  Designs that remind me of the great outdoors: earth and sky, sea and land, grass and sky and the beautiful colors of spring.

My granddaughters are extremely creative and I can see letting them see how they would like to use them.

Ty was so more than just a carpenter when he was on Trading Spaces, and to watch him open up into more and more art design....he was so under-rated.  Looking at the swatches of his fabrics, I found a couple that would make a great impression as a sofa, chair and ottoman for my living room and one would be great to re-upholster my office chair and/or wall hanging/drapes in the office....It would be hard to decide which to start on first.  Anyway, that's my two cents.

The Kimono print in Espresso is my number one choice to reupholster my vintage Flexsteel arm chair  and ottoman with!  I know I won't have enough chocolate chenille fabric left over from the upholstering the matching sofa, but I think choosing another type of fabric for the arm chair is the best way to go.  Adding a pattern and keeping things from being too matchy-matchy.

I work with a group of volunteers at a senior center and at a church, and we make comfort lap quilts for local hospice patients and patients undergoing cancer treatment. The fabric would be used by the volunteers at one or more of our quilting events where we get together and make these comfort quilts for donation to those people who are facing a time in their life where they could use an item that distracts them and brings them warmth and comfort. We back our lap quilts with flannel - soft to the touch for those undergoing cancer treatment, and warm for those hospice patients who are always cold.

Our hospice coordinator tells us that many of the patients are placed in sterile white and gray environments, and the only color in their lives is the colorful quilts that we donate to them.  These quilts are then cherished by family members as a momento of their loved ones. In cases where there are no family, the quilts are used by the former room mates, so they continue to bring comfort to those in their time of need.

I think it would be fun to make a bed cover or window covering by taking a mix of the fabrics and doing long strips of the different colors/shapes and sewing together.  For the window treatment I would leave it so that it could flow with the breeze coming in.  For the bed cover, I wouldn't quilt it but possibly stitch in the ditch to make channels.  What fun looking fabric!

I could also seeing covering a fun chair with some of the bright colored fabric.  It could go with many decors for that extra punch of color.

Wow!  These are beautiful!

Let me see, I would make a bag for my knitting and another for my sewing.  I would use mulitple colors.

Also, I would use strips of fabric to make a window treatment.  I would not line it because I would like it blowing in the breeze.  I would then need to make a bed covering that is  strips of fabrics that aren't quilted but sewn by stitching-in-the-ditch to hold it together and add some texture.

Love Ty's designs and fabrics! I would do one of two things with the fabrics, depending upon how much there is. One, I work as a Recreation Specialist in the inner city in Chattanooga, TN and just got approval to purchase sewing machines, notions, etc to start a sewing program. My neighborhood has high poverty and has a wide variety of ethinicities and languages. I hope the sewing program will help bridge the language and cultural gaps. Since I have very limited funds to purchase fabrics (consummables are harder to fund than "permanent" equipment such as sewing machines,)  these fabrics will provide many people with a great opportunity to make something beautiful!!

Or, I have a heart for the homeless. Most people don't realize how quickly they can become homeless especially in this economy. I use donated fabrics to make quilts and totebags for the quilts and give them to the local homeless shelter.  These fabrics would be wonderful to make a quilt for someone who has lost everything!

Please let me help others with these fabrics!!

I am in the process of a complete redo of our family room into a "mom cave" for quilting.  My children informed me that they wanted to feel welcome in the cave too.  I have given them one end of the room, moving in comfy chairs, a TV, their video game system and an antique "hired man's" bed from other rooms of the house.  The mom cave is now more like a family cave. Even though the entire room is not yet together, we use the space already.  It is so good for my kids to see me being creative.   With Ty's fabrics I would recover their comfy chairs,  make giant versatile floor cushions, matching curtains and a cover for the "hired man's" day bed.

My little sister (15) was quite inspired by Project runway and has taken up sewing as a hobby. She designs her own clothing (she doesn't follow patterns made by others) and she often gets compliments on the clothes she has made. She really liked Mondo Guerra's designs and LOVES mixing and matching bold prints. I often help her with the sewing part, since her strong point is designing, but sometimes needs help using the sewing machine. She recently took some sewing classes so her skill is improving. She is also a HUGE fan of Ty, and having fabric made by him would make her decade. Thanks for sharing this interview with him. Thanks for sharing this interview you had with Ty. I enjoy reading about designer's methods and advice they have for less experienced designers.

These are great!  There is a reading pillow I have been wanting to make and these would be perfect for that.  Or maybe a bag or purse.

Ty (and CANDICE and Vern and Genevieve) are all amazing. We don't get HGTV at home so I immerse myself in those creative energies whenever I am in a place that has capability.

I would LOVE to have some of Ty's fabrics. I am currently re-doing my bedroom and living spaces and would use it for all sorts of soft accents - pillows, quilted wall hangings, bed cloths, drreser scarves, etc. If there was enough I would also make some totes I have designed for my creative tools.

To be surrounded by that creative energy would be heaven to me.

I would have to really look at all the fabrics Ty has created but I do believe I would make a story quilt with my 9 yr. old granddaughter. She is a beginning sewer and I want to teach her to tell a story with fabrics. Something for her to hang on a wall or cover her bed with and have a memory of us making it together.
